February Update: Dice Tray, Devving, and More Art
28 days ago – Tue, Feb 21, 2023 at 12:59:22 PM

Hello you violently and scientifically handsome humans. Here is your monthly update for Dr. Grordbort's Scientific Adventure Violence.

Malfunction Dice Tray Prototype

Here's a look at the advance proofs of the dice tray, ready to receive those rectum-clinching rolls on the Malfunction Tables:

It measures 8 x 10" open and 5.5 x 7.5" when snapped up for action. Snappy, no?

Dev Update

Developmental editing is complete, and chapters 1-4 are with the copy editor for final sprucing. We are finishing up the implementation of dev edits on chapters 5-8, and those will be trundled off to the copy editor by early March.

Meanwhile, we've set up an overall style guide and layout templates for each chapter, so when manuscript polishing is finished and art commissions are done (21 more to go of the 120 pieces we are having commissioned), we'll be ready for layout. Here's a sneak peek at the layout for the spread dealing with interplanetary travel. Please note the excellent snarkiness of our layout maven, who wasn't provided the accompanying text when designing this.

More Art!

Here are a few more cheeky peeks at the massive and growing trove of art commissioned from Wētā Workshop.

Harvey Gins, brash though elusive CEO of Daggersphere, chief rival of Dr. Grordbort's Industries.
The Tub-Thumper character a paladin but more scienterrific!
A Martian Tripod War Machine.
My First Dirigibilito...the modern, personal air travel solution.

We'll be back next month with another update, but feel free to hit us up anytime before then. As always, the best place to reach us is by emailing, but we'll do our best to respond to questions or feedback to this update and on the project comments page.

We're in the home stretch now, friends!

ps. For those wondering about the whole OGL fiasco, there's little to do other than celebrate! The community won a major victory over corporate control, so our project--and many, many others--is safe. We are only drawing from the SRD, which is now under Creative Commons license, so pop a bottle of Lord Cockswain's Courage Porter and toast RPG community activism with us!

New Art and the Open Gaming License
2 months ago – Fri, Jan 20, 2023 at 08:39:53 AM

Greetings Scientifically Minded Adventurers and Adventurely Minded Scientists,

First things first, we know that the Open Gaming License (OGL) is on a lot of people's minds. The past couple weeks have been emotional and tense for thousands of indie creators and even more fans. With regard to this book and our plans for DrG going forward, nothing has changed. We are undergoing the last round of developmental edits, and we're 2/3rds of the way through art commissions. We plan to be in copy editing by the beginning of February and into layout by the beginning of March. We'll keep you posted as all the OGL stuff shakes out, but having consulted with colleagues and advisors, we have no reason to believe that our plans or schedule will be affected.

Now for the fun part. New art from the boffins at Wētā Workshop! Behold the gargantuan tunnellers of Mars, Roxford's Sythe-armed Delver; illustrations for the Ammo/Fuel section and Adventuring Gear section of the equipment chapter; the Scapegrace character class; the Bonzo class airship; the mutant Vrykos; and the GaiarotiQUEEN 5200 G-X Hover-Rocket, which can control the weather...provided you've got the proper crew manning her!

We hope you all have a terribly satisfying weekend, and let us know if you have any questions or feedback!

Damn the torpedoes, full steam ahead!

Happy Holidays: New Art Reveal!
3 months ago – Fri, Dec 23, 2022 at 05:30:33 PM

Greetings and happy holidays from the DrG laboratory! And what better way to spend the holidays than ogling some brand spanking new Grordbortian art, fresh from Isabelle Adamson, design boffin at Wētā Workshop. Here we have two playable character classes, a dastardly NPC, a horrific moon monster, and three glorious and not at all prone to catastrophic malfunction* weapons.

Peruse whilst pretending to listen to Uncle Walter complain about his bunions or half-heartedly helping Cousin Bud mince inedible ingredients for his mincemeat pies.

Thank you for your support in 2022, and we can't wait until the calendar flips over to 2023: the year this book and all of its accoutrement crashlands onto your gaming tables!

Astounding news, dear scientific adventurers! We have settled on the list of art to be commissioned for the book--114 pieces in toto, including 57 new weapons and vehicles--and ALL of them will be produced by Wētā Workshop!

In all honesty, we'd always assumed that we'd have to bring in some 3rd party illustrators to do some or all of this work, for budgetary and scheduling reasons, but thanks to your support for the campaign and pledge manager, and thanks to Wētā's enthusiasm for the project, all of the new art will be coming from the home of Dr. Grordbort's universe and the team of concept artists and creative boffins that have brought to life everything from Lord of the Rings to Avatar.

We can't wait to begin sharing some pieces as they come in. Our challenge now is to make sure the text lives up to the lofty standards of the art that this book will feature. To that end, all is on-schedule, and we are currently playtesting before we start our final rounds of copy editing and proofing. If you have any feedback based upon your reading or experience running/playing the Quick Start, we'd love to hear it.

Thank you for making all of this happen.
